A sweeping, emotionally unforgettable romance about heartbreak, healing, family legacy, and discovering that it is never too late to begin again
From award-winning author Mollie Mathews comes The Color of Love—a deeply emotional second-chance romance set against the lush tropical beauty of Panama, where old wounds, family secrets, and unexpected love collide.
Haunted by heartbreak and the painful unraveling of the life she once believed was certain, Mary-Anne Calder retreats to the beloved home and land left to her by her grandmother, hoping only to heal in peace and rebuild her life quietly.
The last thing she expects is Rafael.
Strong, steady, and deeply protective, Rafael carries scars of his own. A successful businessman with powerful family ties and responsibilities that weigh heavily on him, he understands loss more than most. Yet beneath his quiet strength lies an extraordinary tenderness that slowly awakens something in Mary-Anne she thought had died.
Hope.
But the past is never easily buried.
As secrets begin to surface and emotional storms gather around them, Mary-Anne must decide whether she is brave enough to trust in love again—or whether fear will destroy the fragile happiness she has finally begun to find.
Set amid sun-drenched skies, lush mountains, bougainvillea-covered balconies, luxurious hideaways, and the soulful beauty of Panama, The Color of Love is an immersive, heartfelt story about healing after heartbreak, rediscovering your worth, and learning that the true love can help you become whole again.
Perfect for readers who love:
Readers will also be delighted to meet Mateo Álvarez, Rafael’s charismatic brother—whose story continues in the companion novel The Color of Serenity, a romantic, soul-stirring journey into art, healing, and the unexpected love that changes everything.
If you have ever wondered whether love can still find you after loss…
If you know what it means to rebuild yourself from the ruins…
If you long for a story filled with emotion, beauty, tenderness, and hope…
This book is for you.
READERS JOY…
“The slow-burn tension, power struggles, and lush Panamanian setting make for an emotionally rich, escapist read. A deeply satisfying story — worth every page.”
Mary-Anne and Rafael go from merely tolerating each other, once their initial attraction faces reality, to much more. But the path to get there meanders through the rainforest, the forest, and the coffee plantation with vivid depictions. For two people who were brought up without love, they learn to listen and also open their hearts, but will it be enough?
I enjoyed how characters from other stories written by Ms. Mathews make cameo appearances and enhance the story. The story has a good flow, and the characters have layers which are slowly pulled back as we learn about their lives and fears.
There is negative energy provided by some but Mary-Anne shows the steps she takes to center herself and get the positive results she wants. I liked how her grandmother, who has passed, is portrayed and how her dreams are realized with the stipulations placed in her will. There is a happily ever after, and the epilogue left me satisfied. Mollie Mathews has fast become a favorite author. No matter where her books are set, I’m transported there.”
The Color of Love is a calm, emotionally grounded romance that takes its time with the story and focuses more on healing and personal growth than dramatic plot twists. This is not a fast or flashy romance, and it doesn’t try to be one. Instead, the novel leans into quiet moments, thoughtful conversations, and inner reflection, allowing the emotional journey to unfold naturally.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is its portrayal of mature relationships. The characters feel believable and shaped by their past experiences rather than idealized romantic clichés.
Love here isn’t instant or exaggerated; it grows slowly through trust, patience, and emotional openness. That realistic approach makes the relationships feel sincere and easy to connect with, especially for readers who appreciate depth over drama.
The writing style is clear and accessible, which helps the emotional themes come across smoothly. Even when the story explores complex feelings, the language remains easy to follow and never feels overwhelming.
The setting also plays an important role in shaping the novel’s mood. It creates a calm, emotionally rich atmosphere that supports the reflective tone and reinforces the theme of personal transformation.
