Writing Love in Panama at Christmas

Why this story could only be set here

Christmas has arrived quietly this year.

No winter frost. No frantic rush. Instead, warm air drifts through open doors, insects hum softly at dusk, and the scent of coffee lingers in the background. It’s a Christmas defined not by noise or obligation, but by pause.

And somehow, that stillness became the only way this story could be written.

I didn’t come to Panama planning to write Love in Panama. But Panama has a way of insisting.

Why Panama

Panama is a threshold country.

It is a crossing point — geographically, historically, emotionally. A place where jungle presses against boardrooms, where old land holdings sit beside new money, where beauty and danger coexist without apology.

Here, nothing exists in isolation. Everything leans into something else.

That tension became the pulse of this story.

Panama doesn’t whisper its truths. It reveals them slowly — through land disputes, through inheritance laws, through estates hidden deep in green folds of earth. You feel history here under your feet. You feel power moving quietly, efficiently, without spectacle.

This is not a backdrop that can be replicated.

Why inheritance, land, and power matter

In Love in Panama, inheritance is not sentimental.

It is charged.

Land is never just land. It is legacy. Control. Survival. It determines who belongs and who is pushed out. Who has protection — and who becomes vulnerable.

Power here doesn’t announce itself loudly. It arrives by helicopter. It signs contracts in air-conditioned rooms. It smiles while it negotiates.

And when love enters that equation, nothing remains simple.

That is what drew me deeper into this story. Not the fantasy of escape alone, but the reality of what happens when desire collides with obligation — when affection threatens systems built on ownership and control.

Why this story couldn’t be set anywhere else

Only Panama holds this particular alchemy:

  • Untamed beauty that disarms you
  • Wealth that hides its teeth
  • Nature that refuses to be owned
  • And love that asks for everything, not safely — but honestly

This story required a place where nature is still sovereign, where the land resists being subdued, where legacy is contested daily. A place where characters cannot remain unchanged, no matter how powerful they believe themselves to be.

Panama does not allow complacency.

Writing it at Christmas

Writing this story at Christmas changed it.

There is something about the end of a year that invites reckoning. A willingness to ask harder questions. A stripping back of what no longer fits.

What do we inherit that we didn’t choose?
What are we willing to fight for?
And what happens when love enters the negotiation?

Love in Panama is not a holiday romance — but it is a story about crossing into a life you didn’t plan, and discovering that the thing that could ruin you might also be the thing that wakes you fully alive.

At Christmas, that felt like truth.

More soon — from the coffee fields, the verandas at dusk, and the story unfolding between them.
